Plymouth Rock

It's the day before Thanksgiving. My nephew, Stone, made all the place cards for the table setting and indulged me in my favorite pet rock, Plymouth Rock, which I found on the beach years ago, it appears on our table at every Thanksgiving.

Tree Trimming

Residents of Los Angeles enjoy more reliable electric service thanks to the work of the LADWP’s tree trimmers. Tree limbs coming in contact with power lines, especially during windy or rainy weather, often cause power outages. The Department’s award-winning tree trimming program has been responsible for significantly reducing the number of power outages by trimming the city’s trees on a regular basis. The tree trimmers, who are certified arborists, are careful to preserve the health and beauty of the city’s trees, providing a sense of neighborhood pride while removing obstacles to more reliable electric service. Chorisia speciosa

This beautiful deciduous tree, native to South America, blooms in the Fall. The green trunk and branches are protected by sharp spines.  After blooming, inedible large pear-shaped fruits bear seeds containing a silky floss. In the past, floss from the seeds was used for stuffing pillows. In the states, the Chorisia speciosa can be found along the coast of California, Arizona, southern Texas, and southern Florida.

Not A Happy Camper

My poor little Wilson. He has an ulcer on his eye, his only eye. Yesterday we saw veterinary ophthalmologist. She performed a procedure called debridement. He has to wear this e-collar so he doesn't scratch his eye, and gets drops and ointment regularly throughout the day. Hopefully it will heal in a week so he won't need a more invasive treatment. Breaks my heart.

Skywatch Friday - 16th Street and Walker Ave.

Wilson and I were walking, as we usually do, east down 16th Street. But we usually walk in the morning. As we crossed the street to walk up Walker, the colorful western sky was a real surprise. And I almost passed on bringing my camera...

Averill Park Restoration #2

One small portion of the pond is still filled with water for the ducks.

Averill Park Restoration

A major restoration of the stream and duck pond at Averill Park begins this month. In this photo, the stream has been drained. $682,000 from Quimby funds, developer-paid monies designated for recreation enhancements, will be used to restore the water features at the park.

Chrysler Imperial

The Chrysler Imperial, A Classic Hybrid Tea Rose

A beautiful velvety rose with a heavy spicy fragrance that has been around since 1952, originally used in marketing of the Chrysler Imperial automobile. The 1953 winner of All-America Rose Selections (AARS), a nonprofit association created by the American rose industry and dedicated to the introduction and promotion of exceptional roses.

Southern California is facing a water supply shortage for the third year in a row.

In Los Angeles, You Cannot:

• Water using sprinklers on any day other than Monday and Thursday;
• Use water to wash any hard surfaces such as sidewalks, walkways, driveways or parking areas, unless flushing is needed to protect health and safety;
  
• Use water to clean, fill or maintain decorative fountains unless the water is part of a recirculating system;
  
• Serve water to customers in eating establishments unless requested;
  
• Permit leaks from any pipe or fixture to go unrepaired;
  
• Allow for the washing of a vehicle without using a hose with a self-closing, shut-off device;
  
• Permit watering during periods of rain;
  
• Irrigate landscaping between the hours of 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.;
  
• Water outdoors for more than 15 minutes per watering station, 10 minutes for other irrigation systems;
  
• Allow runoff onto streets and gutters from excessive watering;
  
• Install single-pass cooling systems in new buildings;
  
• Install non-recirculating systems in new car wash and commercial laundry systems;
  
• Permit large landscape areas to water without rain sensors that shut off irrigation systems.
